From a post-lunch leg-stretch to a hard day’s walking, there’s lots on offer for our more active guests. To help you decide where to go, we’ve brought together a selection of our go-to routes and walks in the local area.
There are a handful of shorter walks that can start and end from the doorstep of Number 3 Rivermead. Here’s our picks:
4.3km / 2.6 miles
Walking time: 50 mins
Our ‘block’ loop follows the roads around the cottage so it’s perfect if you’ve left the walking boots at home, and can just chuck on the trainers instead!
When walking clockwise around the loop, you’ll start off generally flat with some uphills, but once you reach the Catterlen junction, it’s downhill all the way!
There are some cracker views along the route, especially at the 90° right-hand turn around the 2.5km mark. Over the gate and across the fields, you’ll spot Blencathra in the background. It’s one of the most recognisable peaks in the Lake District and can usually be seen, even on a bit of a grey day!
5.6km / 3.5 miles
Walking time: 1h 15m
If you fancy heading out to the west of the village instead, this alternative ‘block’ takes in both road and field walking. You might need some more robust shoes for this one if the weather’s a bit grey.
The start of the walk is much the same, until you hit ‘Potter’s Lonnin’, at which point you’ll take a left towards Blencow.
There’s a short section, after the Clickham Inn, which follows the main road towards Penrith so please take care on this section. Once you’re off this road though, head through the fields back towards Newton Reigny. You’ll reappear at the ‘top end’ of the village and can then follow the road back down to home.
We’re fortunate to be situated within close proximity to the Lake District National Park, known the world over for its incredible landscapes. It’s home to Scafell Pike, the highest mountain in England, as well as some other iconic peaks such as Helvellyn, Blencathra, and Skiddaw.
There are shorter walks, smaller peaks, and lakeside ambles too, but rest assured, they’re no less dramatic. There truly is something for everyone around here!
